Introduction to Claris FileMaker and NLS
In the ever-evolving world of technology, generative artificial intelligence arrived with a maelstrom of excitement and imagination. However, for those more practical folks developing and using applications in Claris FileMaker, this new technology may have seemed a bit starry-eyed. In this blog post, we are excited to share a new Add-On that will bring the benefits of Natural Language Search to your applications and begin to demonstrate the utility generative AI can bring to our applications.
Credits Due
First, a big thank you to Ronnie Rios at Claris for letting us get an early look at the files he created at Claris Engage! Much of the framework of this Natural Language Search Add-On is due to the work he demoed during his Claris Engage session, Delivering AI-Driven Solutions with FileMaker.
Second, another thank you to Kristian Olsen of RC Consulting for assisting with some of the finer details of Add-Ons and showing us the way to use WolfPack to make life easier in that regard.
One last thank you to Cris Ippolite of iSolutions for countless conversations over the last year and encouraging our exploration of the use of AI in business. We already look forward to the next homework assignment.
Claris FileMaker Natural Language Search Download
Look we get it. You aren’t here to read about how to use this, you are here to use it! Don’t worry, we aren’t upset (most of these are written for robots anyway), so grab the file and get into it! P.S. The instructions will be right here if you get stuck…
How to use the Natural Language Search File
The zip file provided is a full Add-On package. These were introduced with the release of FileMaker 19 and are an easy way to package and share your code in modules. Here’s how:
1. Place the unzipped folder in the AddonModules folder on your computer. The AddonModules folder is at:
- Mac: /Users/username/Library/Application Support/FileMaker/Extensions/AddonModules
- PC: Users\username\AppData\Local\FileMaker\Extensions\AddonModules
2. Quit and Restart FileMaker.
3. Open your favorite FileMaker Application and install the Natural Language Search from the Add-Ons tab!
More on the Horizon….
There’s certainly a lot more to be said about this Add-On and how it actually works. This post will be extended in some way as we share this with the community of developers and receive feedback. Please feel free to reach out to [email protected] with any thoughts you might have. Otherwise see below for a way to get the scoop the soonest!
