Three years at Acolyte Applications… As I reflect on this milestone, I can’t help but be grateful for the journey that brought me here and the growth I’ve experienced along the way.

Taking the Leap: How I Switched Gears to Tech

Before I found my way to Acolyte Applications, my career path looked quite different. I spent seven years in Higher Education working in Student Life, followed by two and a half years in Marketing as a production and project manager. While I enjoyed aspects of both fields, I felt a pull towards something new – something that would challenge me and allow me to combine my love for technology, design, and organizational management.

Making a significant career change can be daunting, but it’s also an opportunity for tremendous growth. If you’re considering a similar move, here’s my advice:

  1. Identify your transferable skills: Your past experiences are valuable, even in a new field. My background in project management and working with educational institutions turned out to be surprisingly relevant to developing software for nonprofits.
  1. Embrace continuous learning: Be prepared to invest time in learning new skills. The tech world is always evolving, which keeps things exciting (and occasionally overwhelming).
  1. Seek out supportive environments: Look for organizations that value growth and are willing to support your transition. It makes all the difference.
  1. Trust your instincts: If you feel drawn to a new field, there’s likely a reason. Don’t be afraid to explore that pull, even if it seems a bit scary at first.

Finding My Place at Acolyte Applications

One of the key factors in my successful transition has been the incredible support I’ve received at Acolyte Applications. Their commitment to “Compassionate Technology For Visionary People” isn’t just a catchy slogan – it’s a philosophy that permeates everything we do.

Acolyte Applications isn’t just a software development company; it’s a place where technology meets mission. Their focus on nonprofits and educators aligns perfectly with my values, allowing me to use my newfound skills to make a real difference in the world.

The team here has been instrumental in my growth. They’ve provided me with the resources and mentorship I needed to develop my FileMaker skills, always encouraging me to push my boundaries and take on new challenges. It’s been a refreshing change to work in an environment where learning and growth are not just encouraged, but expected.

Overcoming Challenges and Reaping Rewards

Jumping into a new skill set, especially in the tech world, can be overwhelming at times. There were moments when I questioned whether I could master the intricacies of FileMaker development or keep up with the ever-evolving tech landscape. Imposter syndrome? Definitely.

However, I quickly learned that these challenges were opportunities in disguise. Each obstacle I overcame not only improved my technical skills but also boosted my confidence and problem-solving abilities. The satisfaction of creating a custom application that streamlines a nonprofit’s operations or enhances an educational program is immeasurable. It’s like being a tech superhero, but substitute the cape with lots of Acolyte shirts and hoodies (which, shameless plug, you can buy to support our work with non-profits here: www.shop.acolyteapplications.net)

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future

As I look back on these past three years, I’m filled with optimism for the future. The skills I’ve developed, the relationships I’ve built, and the impact I’ve been able to make have all contributed to a sense of satisfaction that I’ve made the right choice.

Working with Acolyte Applications has opened my eyes to the immense potential of technology in the nonprofit sector. As we continue to innovate and create “compassionate technology,” I’m excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. Will I finally understand every aspect of FileMaker without googling (or asking Jonathan, which is the same as Google, but faster.)? Probably not, but I’m certainly going to enjoy trying!

To anyone standing at the crossroads of a career change, I encourage you to take that leap. The challenges you’ll face are far outweighed by the potential for growth, fulfillment, and the opportunity to make a real difference. Plus, you might discover a hidden talent for turning three-day-old coffee into an application that helps people do their good work better.

Here’s to the next three years and beyond, creating technology that makes the world a better place, one application at a time! May your scripts be bug-free and your impact be mighty.
